Hospital Bag Checklist: What I would/wouldn’t bring when giving birth

I personally OVERPACKED l for the birth of our daughter. I made my husband haul in a large Away suticase full of all the items I thought I would use. I probably only used 1/4 of the items that I packed. So here is a list of items I would and wouldn’t bring.

What I would bring:

  • Essential paperwork: Your ID, insurance card, and any paperwork you might need. (You can bring your birth plan, but I don’t think anyone actually looked at ours!)

  • Cell phone and charger with extra long cord. The outlets are super far away from the bed and you’ll be glad that you have the long cord.

  • Toiletries: Bring a hanging tioletry bag (bathrooms are small) with toothbrush/toothpaste, lip balm, deodorant, brush/hair ties, and makeup. I brought my own shampoo, conditioner, and lotion - which I preferred over what the hospital provided.

  • Clothing: This is where I way overpacked. The hospital provides you with a labor gown and postpartum gown - so you really don’t need that much. I would bring one robe, one set of pajamas, slippers, and a going home outfit. And postpartum underwear!

  • Comfort Items: I personally liked having my own blanket, but would also bring something to keep you entertained (during pre-labor) like a book/tablet.

  • Breastfeeding Pillow: I did not bring this and I really wished I had. This gives you extra support when starting to breastfeed, and the hospital pillows are flimsy.

  • For Baby: I would bring one cute announcement photo outfit, a going home outfit, and car seat. (be sure to have you carseat installed prior to going to the hospital!)

What I wouldn’t bring:

  • Diapers/Wipes: Most hospitals will provide these items for you. You also have no idea what size your baby will be, until they arrive.

  • Bottles: If you decide to bottle feed, the hospital will provide this for you.

  • Snacks: We live in a large city, so bringing snacks wasn’t necessary. Our hospital had a cafeteria and was located in an area that had late night food delivery.
